2. Read-Only Permission Posture

Pernee operates on a strict read-only posture for all primary document repositories:
  • No Overwriting or Deletion: Pernee never modifies, renames, moves, or deletes your firm’s source files in SharePoint, OneDrive, or Google Drive.
  • Minimal OAuth Scopes: Integrations request read scopes (e.g., Files.Read.All, Mail.Read).
  • Encrypted Token Management: OAuth refresh and access tokens are encrypted at the application layer with AES-256-GCM before storage. Tokens are refreshed automatically without requiring re-authentication.

3. Bulk Ingestion Engine (100k+ Documents)

Top accounting practices frequently connect central SharePoint libraries housing 50,000 to 200,000+ client tax files. Ingesting a corpus of this scale requires dedicated infrastructure that avoids serverless timeouts and rate-limit throttling.

Asynchronous Worker Architecture

Pernee splits bulk ingestion into a two-phase asynchronous pipeline:
  1. Discovery (Metadata Pass): The connector traverses folder trees, catalogs document metadata (filenames, paths, modified timestamps, sizes), and maps them into staging tables without downloading full payloads.
  2. Chunked Hydration Workers: Documents are fanned out across asynchronous background workers (powered by Inngest). Each worker downloads, parses, and vectors files in discrete 100-document batches.
  3. Throttling & Backoff: Integrations detect API rate limits (HTTP 429 Retry-After) and automatically back off with jitter to protect firm API quotas.
  4. Resumable Sync: Every processed file records its sync state. If a network interruption occurs, the sync resumes exactly where it left off without re-processing completed files.

Enterprise CLI Backfills

For ultra-large migrations or historical backfills across hundreds of clients, Pernee provides a dedicated command-line backfill worker (npm run bulk:backfill). Firm IT administrators can execute backfills directly within their private network, slicing by provider and client ID.

4. Document Processing & OCR

Once a document is discovered, Pernee’s ingestion pipeline prepares it for tax research and review:
  • Multi-Format Extraction: Parses multi-tab Excel workbooks (.xlsx), native PDFs, scanned image PDFs, Word documents (.docx), and .eml email files.
  • OCR for Scanned Tax Slips: Scanned W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, and brokerage statements undergo high-accuracy optical character recognition.
  • Client & Entity Tagging: Extracted chunks are tagged with entity identifiers (EIN, SSN, Tax Year, Filing Type) and isolated by client Row-Level Security.

5. Disconnecting an Integration

Firm administrators can revoke access to any connector at any time in Settings → Integrations:
  • Revoking a connector immediately stops all active sync jobs and deletes the stored OAuth credentials.
  • Document chunks previously indexed remain in your firm’s private database until purged or tombstoned by your firm administrator.
