# Getting your client list into Pernee

> Export your client list from whatever you keep it in now, drop the file in, and check it before anything saves.

Pernee works off your book. Export your client list from whatever you keep it in now, drop the file in, and check what came through before anything saves.

There's no template to fill in and no column mapping. One row per client is enough.

## Guides by software

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="CCH Axcess" icon="table" href="/help/guides/cch-axcess">
    Export the grid as a CSV.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Lacerte" icon="file-spreadsheet" href="/help/guides/lacerte">
    Export to file, comma delimited.
  </Card>

  <Card title="UltraTax CS" icon="file-text" href="/help/guides/ultratax-cs">
    Run a client listing report.
  </Card>

  <Card title="SmartVault" icon="folder" href="/help/guides/smartvault">
    Export to CSV from the portal.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

Not on the list? Doesn't matter. Any file with one row per client works, including a spreadsheet somebody keeps by hand.

## What Pernee pulls out

Four things per client:

| Field | What it is |
| - | - |
| Legal name | The name the return is filed under |
| Entity type | Partnership, corporation, trust, individual and so on |
| Return form | Comes from the entity type |
| Tax year | The year the return covers |

Entity types and the forms they map to:

| Entity type | Form |
| - | - |
| Partnership | 1065 |
| Corporation | 1120 |
| S-Corporation | 1120-S |
| Foreign corporation | 1120-F |
| Trust | 1041 |
| Estate | 1041 |
| Individual | 1040 |
| Non-profit | 990 |
| Private foundation | 990-PF |

If a column doesn't make sense to Pernee, it leaves it alone. It won't guess. Anything it wasn't sure about gets flagged so you can fix it before it saves.

## What you can send

Up to 10 files at a time, 20 MB each.

| Kind | Extensions |
| - | - |
| Spreadsheets | `.csv`, `.xls`, `.xlsx`, `.xlsm`, `.xlsb`, `.ods` |
| Documents | `.doc`, `.docx`, `.odt`, `.rtf` |
| PDFs and scans | `.pdf`, `.png`, `.jpg`, `.jpeg` |

A PDF of a printed client list works. So does a photo of one.

## Importing it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Drop the file in">
    Use the card in Getting started, or open **Clients** and choose **Import clients**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check what came through">
    Every field is editable on the review screen. Rows Pernee wasn't sure about are flagged rather than filled in with a default, because a 1120 sitting where the sheet said 1120-S is the kind of thing nobody catches later.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Hit Import">
    Nothing saves to your book until you do.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Just trying it on one return? Adding a single client by hand is quicker. Import the rest whenever.
